Installation & Specifications

Hardware Specifications

Q: What length of a track should I order?

A: This is dependent on the amount of clearance you have on at least one side of your doorway. If you want to be able to access your entire doorway, then it is recommended that you order a hardware kit that is twice as long as the combined width of your doors. For example if you are installing a single 4’ door, you will want to order a hardware kit with an 8’ track. If you are mounting two 3’ doors, then you will want to order a 12’ track ((3’ + 3’) x 2 = 12’). If you don’t have the necessary clearance for both doors, then you may want to consider one of our Bypass Barn Door Hardware Kits. You can browse our selection of bypass kits HERE.

Q: How much extra track length do I need in order to accommodate the door stops? For example: if I need a 6’ track, should I order the 6’ 7” hardware kit so that my doors will go right to the 6’ mark?

A: You do not have to accommodate for the doors stops. The door stops are typically installed several inches in from the end of the track, but the door hangers are also installed several inches in from each side of the door. So when your door is in the open position, the edge of the door will be flush with the edge of the track. Order the length of track you will require for your installation. If you need a 6’ track, then order a 6’ track.

Q: How far apart are the pre-drilled spacer holes?

A: That is dependent on the length of the track in the hardware kit you are ordering. See page 10 of the installation manual for the spacer hole distances. The installation manual can be found HERE. If the distance between the spacer holes doesn’t match the distance between the studs in your wall, then it is recommended that you first mount a header board to your studs and then mount the hardware kit to your header board. Mounting a header board is always recommended as it adds greater stability to your barn door installation.

Q: What is the distance from the wall to the outside of the door?

A: The distance from the wall to the outside the door is 2-1/4”.

Q: What is the distance from the wall to the inside of the door?

A: The distance from the wall to the inside of the door can be calculated using the following formula: (2-1/4") - (thickness of door). For example, if your door is 1-1/2" thick then you will apply the following formula: (2-1/4") - (1-1/2") = 3/4". In this example the distance between the wall and the inside of your inner door is 3/4".

Q: What thickness of doors can the harware kit accommodate?

A: The kit is designed for doors between 1-3/8” to 1-3/4” thick. If your doors are less than 1-3/8” thick or greater than 1-3/4”, then you will require shorter or longer hex bolts to mount the hanger to your door. If the door is greater than 2” thick, then you will require spacer extensions so that the doors can pass each other. The maximum door thickness is 2-1/2”. Spacer extenders and longer/shorter hex bolts can be provided at a surcharge. To order spacer extenders and/or hex bolts click HERE and order the correct option for your door thickness, number of doors and track length. If you have any questions, call us at 1-800-997-5085 or send us an email at info@rusticrollingdoors.com.

Q: Are the hardware kits available in custom sizes?

A: No, they are only available on the sizes listed on the website. If you require an irregular length, we recommend that you order the next size up and then cut down the track to the length you need. It doesn’t compromise the integrity of the track.

Q: What track lengths do you have available?

A: Our bypass hardware kits are available in the following track lengths: 4', 4' 6", 5', 5' 6", 6', 6' 7", 7', 7' 6", 7' 11", 9', 10', 11', 12', 13', 14', 15', 15' 10', 18' and 20'. To select your track length, choose the “Track Length” option, which is found below the price on the product page.

Q: Are the hardware kits available in any other finishes than just Flat Black?

A: No, the hardware kits listed on the website are only available in a Flat Black finish. However, we can do custom bypass kits through a different manufacturer. If you would like a quote, give us a call at 1-800-997-5085 or send us an email at info@rusticrollingdoors.com.

Installation

Q: The pre-drilled spacer holes on the track don’t match the studs in my wall. What can I do?

A: Often times the studs in your wall won’t be aligned with your doorway in such a way that your studs line up with the hardware kit track. In this case, you will want to mount a header board to the studs above the doorway and then mount the hardware to the header board. This will increase the stability of your barn door hardware installation and allow you to mount your hardware kit anywhere along the header board.

Q: Can I cut the track (rail)?

A: Yes, as mentioned above you can cut the track down to the size you need without having it compromise the integrity of the track. You can use any saw that is designed to cut steel, including a hacksaw or reciprocating saw. Then soften the edges with a circular grinder or metal file. Finish the edges with a course grit sand paper. Most black spray paint can be to touch up the cut end as it won't be noticeable. For a more exact match, bring the cut-off end of the track to a paint store and have them to a color match.

Q: Does the hardware kit contain all of the parts I will require to mount my barn doors?

A: Yes, the only things you will need to provide are the doors and any handles for the doors. All of the other components required to hang your doors are included in the hardware kit.

Q: I lost my copy of the installation instructions. Can I download another copy from your website?

A: Yes, you can find a PDF of the hardware kit installation instructions HERE (Spoke Wheel Single/Double Barn Door Hardware Kit installation manual is HERE).

Shipping

Q: When will my hardware kit be delivered?

A: Orders are generally processed and shipped within 2 business days of the order date. Courier delivery typically takes 3-4 business days, depending on which region they are being shipped to.

Q: Do you ship internationally?

A: No, unfortunately we only ship to the continental USA. We do ship to freight forwarding addresses, so you could use a freight forwarding company to ship your hardware kit internationally.

Q: Where are the hardware kits shipped from?

A: Atlanta, Georgia.

General

Q: What is the difference between each style of the Single/Double Barn Door Hardware kits?

A: All of the other hardware kits are the same. The only difference is the hanger style, so if you are undecided, choose your hardware kit based on the hanger style you like best.

Q: How much clearance is required above the doorway?

A: The Horseshoe hardware kit requires 4-3/8” of clearance and the Low Profile hardware kit requires 4-5/8” of clearance. All of the others require between 5” – 6” of clearance. Please call us at 1-800-997-5085 or send us an email at info@rusticrollingdoors.com for specifications.

Q: Do you sell a bypass barn door hardware kits?

A: Yes, you can browse our selection of bypass barn door hardware kits HERE

Q: Which soft close mechanism on your website is compatible with this hardware kit?

A: The compatible soft close mechanism is simply called “Barn Door Soft Close” on our website and it can be found HERE.

Great customer service

We recently ordered and received hardware for installing a barn door. We were missing one very tiny screw from the door stopper. I emailed Rustic and they responded within hours... not days... and promptly took care of our small problem... which was a big deal to us! Awesome customer service, and we love our new door! Thank you.

Spoke wheel looks good in a bike shop

Installed in a bicycle shop so we thought the spoke wheel would be appropriate and it is. I deducted a star due to the very difficult installation. This is our 2nd barn door so we knew it would require tweeking but this was way more work than it need be. Called to ask for shorter spacers since the gap between the door and the wall was huge and told there were none so purchased at the hardware store. The gap is smaller but still there but to fix we need to take the header board we installed down and shave an inch off the top so the spoke wheel will not rub when we purchase even shorter spacers. The first set of spacers cost us $28 and that will then be times 2 and good thing we are installing our self because if we had to also pay for labor it would kill us.

Thank you for your feedback Sharon. As you mentioned, the reason that the spacers are the length that they are, is so that there is sufficient space for the hardware when the doors are passing each other. If we were to offer shorter spacers, custom modifications would need to be made (as was the case for you), which we don't expect our customers to make. Unfortunately the space between the doors is somewhat unavoidable due to the mounting bolts that hold the door to the hanger. The best way to counter this is to have sufficient overlap between the sides of your doorway and the sides of your door as well as overlap at the center between the two doors. This means getting doors that are approximately 4 inches wider than you would normally expect for a traditional door. This allows for sufficient coverage so that there is no line of sight into the next room when looking at the doorway from an angle. We're glad to hear that your installation worked out in the end.

Service

The product was wonderful. Simple to put up but the real issue is the service. I bought it and was to get it before Thanksgiving as the barn door were to be the star of the new decor for Thanksgiving. I was told it would come by then. Then the date changed and changed again. I did not get it until days after the event. I called and got a very nice young man on the phone and expressed my frustration and disappointment. He told me that once it leaves your business, that they are not responsible for delivery. I suggested that be shown on your website as I could have gone to a local business and got it sooner. I never heard back from your company. That is poor customer service and for that reason, I would not recommend you.

I'm sorry to hear that your hardware kit was not delivered on the anticipated date. Although we strive to deliver orders in a timely manner, sometimes there are delays with the courier company that are out of our control; as was the case in this situation. That being said, we do try to work with the courier company in these situations to see if there is anything that can be done to speed up delivery. You did suggest that we add a disclaimer to our product page warning potential customers that we were not responsible for shipping times, but we decided that wasn't necessary as most people understand that there can be occasional delays that are out of anyone's control. I'm sorry that no one got back to you regarding your suggestion, based on the correspondence, it was not clear that you were expecting a response.
