This is dependent on the amount of clearance (available wall space) you have on at least one side of your doorway. If you want to be able to access your entire doorway, then it is recommended that you order a hardware kit that is twice as long as the width of your door (for a single door) or twice as long as the combined width of your doors (for double doors). This is to ensure that the door has enough track space to move to when being pushed into the open position. For example, if you are installing a single 4’ door, you will want to order a hardware kit with an 8’ track. If you are mounting two 3’ doors, then you will want to order a 12’ track ((3’ + 3’) x 2 = 12’). If you don’t have the necessary clearance on either side of the doorway for both doors, then you may want to consider one of our Bypass Barn Door Hardware Kits.
Frequently Asked Questions
Hardware Specifications
What length of a track should I order?
What is the difference between the Classic Strap and Low Profile hardware kits? The hanger design looks the same.
The only difference is that the strap (the metal part of the hanger that mounts to the front of the door) on the Classic Strap hanger extends over the top of the wheel to the other side of the wheel. On the Low Profile hanger, the strap goes up to the top of the wheel but does not extend over the wheel. This can be good when there is limited space above the doorway as the Low Profile hanger requires less overhead clearance above the doorway (for installation), but apart from that, both hanger styles perform equally well and there are no other differences between the two hanger designs. Please see the “Specifications” section on our product pages to see the difference in design.
How much extra track length do I need in order to accommodate the door stops? For example: if I need a 6’ track, should I order the 6’ 7” hardware kit so that my doors will go right to the 6’ mark?
You do not have to accommodate for the door stops. The door stops are typically installed several inches in from the end of the track, but the door hangers are also installed several inches in from each side of the door. So when your door is in the open position, the edge of the door will be flush with the edge of the track. Order the length of track you will require for your installation. If you need a 6’ track, then order a 6’ track.
What kind of floor guide should I get with my hardware kit? (hint: it's included)
The hardware kit already includes 1 floor guide for a single door and 2 guides for a double door. It is a dual clip style of guide so it can either work as a fin style guide and fit into a mortised line in the bottom of the door or they can be placed on either side of the door in a "cradle" setup. This style of guide is mounted to the floor. If you prefer a wall mounted guide, they can be found on the Floor Guides Collection Page and are purchased separately.
How far apart are the pre-drilled spacer holes on the track?
All of the pre-drilled holes are at 16" on center. Please see the “Specifications” section on our product pages for the spacer hole distances. If the location of the spacer holes on the track doesn’t match the distance between the studs in your wall, then it is recommended that you first mount a header board to your studs and then mount the hardware kit to your header board. Mounting a header board is always recommended as it adds greater stability to your barn door installation. A 1 x 6 board is sufficient for a header board.
What is the distance from the wall to the outside face of the door?
The distance from the wall to the outside face of the door is 2-1/4”.
Are the hardware kits available in custom sizes?
No, they are only available in the sizes listed on the website. If you require an irregular length, we recommend that you order the next size up and then cut down the track to the length you need. It doesn’t compromise the integrity of the track. If you need a track length longer than 20', then please reach out to us and we will give you a custom quote.
Installation
What can I do if the pre-drilled spacer holes on the track don’t match the studs in my wall?
Often the studs in your wall won’t be aligned with your doorway in such a way that your studs line up with the hardware kit track. In this case, you will want to mount a header board to the studs above the doorway and then mount the hardware to the header board. This will increase the stability of your barn door hardware installation and allow you to mount your hardware kit anywhere along the header board. A 1 x 6 board is sufficient as a header board.
Can I cut the track (rail)?
Yes, you can cut the track down to the size you need without having it compromise the integrity of the track. You can use any saw that is designed to cut steel, including a hacksaw or reciprocating saw. Then soften the edges with a circular grinder or metal file. Finish the edges with coarse-grit sandpaper. Most black spray paint can be used to touch up the cut end and won't be noticeable. For a more exact match, bring the cut-off end of the track to a paint store and have them do a color match.
Does the hardware kit contain all of the parts required to mount my barn doors?
Yes, the only things you will need to provide are the doors and any handles for the doors. All of the other components required to hang your doors are included in the hardware kit (including the floor guides).
I lost my copy of the installation instructions. Can I download another copy from your website?
Yes, you can find a PDF of the hardware kit installation instructions under the "Resources" section on the product page.

General
What is the difference between each of the different models of hardware kits?
The difference between the different types of single or double door (single track) hardware kits is the design of the hanger. All models function the same way and have the same weight capcity. Some have different overhead clearance requirements, which may need to be taken into consideration. That information can be found in the "Specifications" section of the product page.
